Lake Wakatipu Fishing: Licences, Seasons and Lake Rules

Lake Wakatipu fishing requires a valid licence and attention to the lake's closed areas. Understand the 2026/2027 rules before choosing shore fishing or a guided boat outing.

Lake Wakatipu fishing starts with the licence

Lake Wakatipu fishing is governed by the Otago sport fishing rules, with specific closed areas and daily limits for the 2026/2027 season. Each person fishing needs a valid licence. Visitors from overseas must obtain a Non-Resident licence, available for a day or a whole season. Organise that requirement before concentrating on tackle, meeting points or the length of a boat trip.

The lake rules permit year-round fishing in the areas outside the closures, using fly, spinner or bait. That gives several ways to approach the activity, but the permission belongs to the lake and its stated conditions. River mouths, separate waterways and closed bays need careful attention on a map. The Lake Wakatipu overview helps place the main areas around the lake.

Closed areas and daily limits for 2026/2027

Fishing is closed in the defined Queenstown Bay area between the outermost point of the Gardens and the southern bank of the One Mile Creek mouth. There is also a closure within 100 metres of every part of the Walter Peak jetty in Black Bay. These are specific spatial restrictions: identify them before selecting a fishing position rather than relying on proximity to a convenient pier or town shore.

In the remainder of the lake, the daily limit is 2 trout and 4 salmon. The relevant lake note specifies no minimum length. These limits concern what may be kept; a guided outing still operates within them. When fishing from a motor-powered boat, remain at least 100 metres from people fishing from the shore. Leave those anglers their required space even when the boat is moving towards another fishing position.

Keep the limits, closed areas and boat separation in the same plan. A valid licence is one part of fishing legally, while the location and method must also comply with the lake regulations. Choose your shore access or boat arrangements with those conditions in mind.

What the guided boat outing provides

The guided fishing trip lasts 3 hours and starts at Frankton Marina. Equipment, an expert guide, snacks and cold non-alcoholic drinks are included. Any catch you keep within local limits can be cleaned and vacuum packed. A fishing licence is additional, available through Fish and Game or on the boat, and transport to and from the lake is excluded.

This is a practical option if you want equipment and on-water guidance together. Plan the journey to Frankton Marina separately from the fishing time, especially if you are staying in central Queenstown. Catching fish depends on the outing and conditions; the included service is the guided trip and equipment. For an exclusively booked group, the separate private tours guide covers the private fishing charter.

Shore fishing, tributaries and water conditions

Bob's Cove is described as a place for shore fishing. Use the marked access from the designated parking area on the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road. Do not park on the roadside or reverse onto the road. If you plan to combine fishing with a walk, read the shore walks guide and keep the route's access arrangements separate from the fishing rules.

The lake's year-round rule must not be carried over to tributaries. Waterways including the Greenstone and Caples have their own entries in the Otago regulations. Treat a move from the lake to a river as a fresh rules decision. Likewise, a licence valid here does not cover the separately managed Taupō fishing area.

Water near the head of the lake is very cold, and currents at river mouths can be strong. Consider your footing and access without entering the water casually. For independent boating, prepare suitable life jackets, weather information, communication and a return plan. Since 9 October 2026, everyone on a moving recreational boat up to and including 6 metres must wear a life jacket, including on kayaks and paddleboards.

Choosing how fishing fits into your visit

A guided boat session makes fishing a defined activity in the day. Shore fishing involves organising your own equipment, lawful location and access. If the main aim is simply to see the lake from the water, compare the lake cruises instead. That distinction helps a group choose between an angling session and a sightseeing outing without expecting the same experience from both.

Fishing questions

Which licence does an overseas visitor need?

A Non-Resident licence is required, with day and whole-season options. Each person fishing needs a valid licence, including when joining a guided trip.

Is the whole lake open to fishing?

The defined Queenstown Bay area and the area within 100 metres of every part of the Walter Peak jetty in Black Bay are closed. The remaining lake has year-round fishing under the 2026/2027 rules.

How many fish may be kept?

The daily lake limit is 2 trout and 4 salmon. Follow those limits on guided trips as well as when fishing independently, and use separate regulations for tributaries.
