Arriving at Queenstown Airport
Queenstown Airport (ZQN) is the starting point for an arrival plan that may finish in central Queenstown, on another part of the lakeshore or in Glenorchy. The airport gives about 20 minutes to downtown as an orientation. Treat that as a planning estimate rather than a fixed transfer time, and leave space between arrival and any timed activity.
Choose the destination address before choosing transport. A central meeting point, a hillside accommodation address and a stay at the head of the lake create different journeys. The accommodation area guide helps compare these locations. Keep the first journey simple, then plan the wider lakeshore once the arrival arrangements are settled.
Taxi and transfer from Queenstown Airport (ZQN)
A taxi or arranged transfer can form the direct arrival leg to the accommodation. Provide the actual address, arrival details and the number of travellers when arranging it, and agree the charge for that journey. For a stay in Glenorchy, consider a direct airport transfer as an alternative to collecting a car or travelling into central Queenstown first.
Keep an airport transfer separate from an excursion’s meeting point. A tour that starts in town begins after the airport journey has finished. Allow time to reach the accommodation, deal with luggage and continue to the named departure place. Avoid building a tight connection around the airport’s indicative downtown driving time.
Orbus to the Frankton and central area
Orbus route 1, Sunshine Bay to Remarkables Shops, serves Queenstown Airport and links the Frankton and central areas. Use the timetable for the actual airport stop on the travel day. Route operating hours describe the line as a whole; they are not departure times for every stop along it.
The fare page updated on 1 November 2026 gives adults a Bee Card fare of 2.50 NZD and an airport cash fare of 10 NZD. Bank and credit cards are not accepted on the bus. A Bee Card costs 5 NZD and requires at least 5 NZD of credit to be added. Decide how to pay before boarding, particularly when comparing a single airport journey with repeated bus use.
For an eligible bus connection within 45 minutes, tag the card on both buses. Cash transfers and ferry transfers are excluded from that arrangement. The ferry has its own payment rules, so plan a bus-and-boat journey as distinct legs rather than treating a bus ticket as a lake crossing.

Continue from Queenstown to Glenorchy
After arrival, a small-group outing from Athol Street combines driver commentary with time to explore Glenorchy independently. This is an excursion from town.
Car rental and parking
A rental car collected at ZQN is an option for an itinerary spread between Glenorchy, Kingston and Bob’s Cove. Compare the actual rental conditions, collection arrangements and planned roads alongside the accommodation location. New Zealand drives on the left. Review NZTA’s current licence requirements for overseas drivers before using a foreign licence or international driving permit.
Airport collection and drop-off have different arrangements. The P20 express spaces offer the first 20 minutes free, after which normal terminal parking charges apply. Directly outside the terminal, stop only for immediate loading or unloading; the driver stays with the car and does not wait or park there.
For a later stop at Bob’s Cove, use the designated car park on the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road. Do not park on the roadside or reverse out onto the road. The walking guide explains the marked lakeshore access and the steep Picnic Point branch. Include parking and the walk itself when allocating time to a stop.

Onward travel and the Glenorchy road
For driving to Glenorchy, the Dart River operator recommends at least an hour each way including opportunities for photographs. Consult current NZTA highway conditions and QLDC local-road information before the drive. Weather and road conditions belong in the day’s planning, along with the precise start of a river activity. See the Glenorchy guide for the destination.
InterCity’s main Queenstown stop is at the Athol Street car park. Athol Street is also the starting area for the Glenorchy excursion shown here. That outing includes an air-conditioned vehicle, professional driver-guide commentary, Māori history and mythology through storytelling, and free exploration time in Glenorchy. Arrange the journey from the airport separately and use this as a later day out. The tour comparison helps place it within a wider lake itinerary.
